PROPOSAL IN RESPONSE TO RESEARCH:

Now that I have completed my research stage of my project, I feel it important to reflect on what conventions of my products I have established in response to feedback and evidence, gained from both customer and existing product research. It is important that I reflect on conventions established all the way through my project, so that I can ensure that all of my conventions are indeed attractive and appealing towards my target audience, leading to further success of my product.

Based on evidence from my questionnaire, of which I handed out to a range of age groups in differing settings, I have been able to confirm some of the conventions that will appeal to my target audience, and that I will strongly apply to my products with the aim to improve its success.

From my questionnaire, I was able to identify that my target audience will be between an age group of 15-18 years old, and female. I feel this is quite a positive target audience to produce for, as due to the fact that i am a female of that age group, I feel I have a better grasp of what kind of things will be appealing toward that target audience, thus ensuring that all appealing conventions are included, leading hopefully to further success of my product.

Also with reference, to my questionnaire results I have established the genre of which will be applied to my music video, advertisement and CD album cover. This genre is Indie-pop/Pop. I established this as the majority of my target audience rated this genre as their preference, thus by applying this genre I can ensure that my target audience will be attracted to my products. It is important that this genre stays constant throughout the entire project, and is not confused with other genres, of which may be less appealing. To ensure that I achieve this, it is important that the msie-en-cence costume and make-up code, props, iconography and conventions of the video itself, are all representative of the pop and indie nature. This is why I will have to closely examine current pop music videos on the market, that are already successful products to ensure that my product follows similar conventions and applications.

I have had to ensure that the models I use in all my products are also presenting an image associated with the genre, of my products, so that the image, of which was highlighted as an important feature of the products, will be appealing to my target audience.

I will use a range of social media, on a range of platforms to publicise and advertise my products as especially due to the age of my target audience, I feel it will be an good way to keep my target audience in the loop and thus lead to further success of my products.

The colour scheme and typography that I use, will too have to be confirmative of my pop/indie pop genre, as the song too will have to be, however i will have to ensure that this genre shown through colour scheme and typography is applied throughout all three of my products to avoid confusion and a range of genres being applied which could potentially deter my target audience. For this reason once I have chosen the typography and colour scheme, although maybe not identical I will aim to keep this flow throughout all my products further emphasising my chosen genre and thus appealing to my target audience.

The average price of my album cover, will be between £6-7.00, and the image on the front will be one of the most important conventions to entice people to buy my album cover. This is so important as if my target audience is attracted to one of my products it will increase the possibility of the rest of my products being successful and to be sold as a set.

By producing this brief/proposal I have given myself a plan of which I can closely refer back to when producing my three products, as a means of ensuring that all the current conventions I have already established can and will be applied leading to the overall success of my products.

Here is my customer profile.

Here I have created a fictional character, of whom is representative of my entire target audience. To create this I needed to refer closely back to my questionnaire and the results from this, as a means of reminding myself of the likes and dislikes of my target audience. It is really important that I create this, as due to the fact that my products will have to be appealing to the particular preferences of my target audience, creating an visual fictional character of whom represents my target audience enables me to be vigilant in corresponding my ideas to the preferences of my target audience ultimately leading to a more successful, appealing product. I will need to refer back to this throughout the remainder of my planning and also when I come to producing my products, as this will ensure my products are attractive to my target audience.

Results from questionaiire. real from naomipalfreman36

Here, I collected the results from my questionnaire, and plotted the data onto visual graphs so that I can establish the conventions of which appeal to my target audience. From this data, I have firstly established my target audience, useful as now I am aware of whom I am producing my products for. Also from the rest of the data I am now aware of the conventions that appeal to my particular target audience. This is important, as if I know what my target audience wants, I will be able to include appealing conventions, furthering the chances of them being attracted to my products and thus improving its success rates. I think it is very good that the age group of my target audience is similar to mine, as this means that I am more aware of appealing conventions too, thus furthering my chances of a successful three products.

Amy winehouse replicar from naomipalfreman36

Here I have replicated an existing album cover, published with reference to Amy Winehouse's album 'Hidden Treasures'. I feel this is an important task, as my replicating an existing album cover I am familiarising myself with the typical conventions necessary when producing an successful album cover and in addition I am also able to analyse audience feedback in which will aid me in improvements I can make when producing my actual album cover, at the end of my project. I feel this task has been successful, and I aim o refer to it when actually producing my album cover.

Friday 20 November 2015

Here I have analysed Taylor Swift 'Bad Blood' advertisement, I thought this very appropriate after actually analysing the actual music video, as I felt this meant that I could understand the transformation of genre and themes from video form to image form, of which I will actually have to achieve when I create both my music video and also my magazine advertisement for my artist. Furthermore for this task it is important that I analyse current products available on the market, as a means of ensuring I conform to all typical appealing conventions that are both enjoyed and expected when creating my own advertisement.

Narrative theories from naomipalfreman36

Here I have analysed 'Taylor Swift- Love Story' with reference to narrative theories. It is important that I do this, as it will further enhance my understanding of what conventions I will want to follow when producing my own music video, for example in this particular one, there is a strong fairy-tale reference to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet thus, attracting a specific target audience. This therefore enhances my thoughts and imagination, enriching me with ideas of what particular conventions and themes are attractive to a target audience similar to my own.

Friday 6 November 2015

This is an analysis of 'Foo Fighters learn to fly' music video with strong references to narrative theories, for example theories presented by Todorov and Propp, two theorists who identify several conventions and components present in many music videos. It is beneficial for me to analyse existing products in this nature because when creating my own music video it is important that I understand narrative conventions that are present in other pieces of successful media, thus applying them to my own music video may help to increase my video's popularity. In addition to this I can also establish which narrative conventions appeal to which target audiences and thus I can decide what narrative conventions I will apply to my own music video for purposes of attracting my own target audience, in this case it is important for analysis of genre to come into part. This particular music video was confirmative to Todorov's narrative theory and appeals due to its humour applied within Todorov's structure of narrative.

Here i have analysed feedback for my editing task shown below. This is important as i must ensure that i take on board audience feedback so that i am aware of conventions that have been appealing to people, and thus i can include them in my own music video in attempt to attract a wider target audience. Furthermore i can also analyse negative conventions and thus not include them in my own music video to avoid deterring people from watching my video. This is an important part of my research as i am becoming aware of the popular and successful conventions used in everyday, popular music videos and I am also learning how to apply these conventions using platforms such as abode after effects which takes time to master the use of new tools and effects and thus am preparing myself for the new software i will come into contact with when making and editing my own music video later on.

Monday 19 October 2015

Here, Julianna (the person im working with) and I went around the school, filming different shots of Rebecca. we did this with an aim to practice our editing techniques, in order to ensure our skills our up to a high standard ready for when we begin to edit our own music video. We used abode after effects as our hardware in which we were to edit this shot, although difficult at first to actually learn the controls of this new software, with the aid of YouTube tutorials we were able to complete the task. I shall go around peers and friends at school to ask them to express their views also, this will further enrich my understanding of attractive editing effects that will further encourage people to watch my music video.

Here I have analysed how females are represented in the media, with reference to album covers. I have chosen kylie Minogue as she is a very iconic women, well established in the media and so I feel she is a clear representation of females in general. I have analysed this to give me ideas of whether I am aiming to conform or subvert Orr the typical representation of women within the media, when making my own album cover.

Representations of women in the media deconstruction neyo, taylor swift, ect. from naomipalfreman36

Here I have analysed how females are presented in music videos, using two music videos 'coming with you' and 'bad blood' of which portray very different representations of women and demonstrate very different messages. it is important for me to analyse the representations of gender in order to ensure that I am aware as to whether I will conform or subvert from the typical representations of gender in my own music video. I have also ensured that I make reference to feminine theories such as Mulvey who established the male gaze theory.

Thursday 17 September 2015

Here I have analysed how females are represented in the media in order to ensure that I can present any females in my music video in a way that attracts my particular target audience and also conforms to the typical media stereotypes and representations of women.

Hall of famedeconstruction from naomipalfreman36

Here I have deconstructed the first four shots of the music video 'Hall of fame'. It is important for me to do this as it not only gives me inspiration for the producing of my own music video, but also enables me to develop my understanding of shot types and typical conventions used in successful music videos available on today's market. I feel inspired by the shot types, editing techniques ,mise-en.cene and of course the lyrics and music, demonstrated in this music video and so I feel I know have enriched thoughts about what kind of things I could include in my own music video. One thing that stood out for me in this music video was the mise-en-cence of lighting. The range of both high key and low key lighting throughout the video really influences the mood of the audience and their interpretations of the lyrics so therefore I will definitely experiment with my lighting in my music video to ensure that the lighting is in fact reflective of the lyrics and mood I am trying to create- this idea of my visuals (in this case mise-en-cence lighting) actually follows the typology of Andrew Goodwins 'Illustrative' music videos!

Friday 4 September 2015

For my research it is important that I explore music videos that are successful in society today. While searching through music videos on YouTube, I came across this video 'Hall of Fame'- the script ft.Will.i.am. This song came out on the 19th August 2012,and since then has reached 195,578,748 views on YouTube. The track was given its first radio play on Capital Fm on 23 July 2012. The song stood at number one in Ireland for four weeks, while occupying number two in the UK's charts, narrowly missing out on first position of which was granted to 'Let me love you'- Ne-Yo. I really like this 'illustrative' (Andrew Goodwin's theory) music video, of which combines both Narrative and performance elements, following Simon Firths music video typologies and classification. The narrative elements are interspersed, following the life's of two individuals who are both learning to follow their differing dreams, one a keen ballerina and the other an avid boxer. This therefore attracts me to the song because I feel that it has a deep meaning to it, which can also inspire many young people maybe interested in pursuing their future in the performance industry and so this songs target audience could arguably be young people. The performance elements of the song, show the 'Script' of whom are the Irish pop band who wrote this song and Black eyed peas 'Will.I.am' performing this song in a warehouse space. This gives me the indication that they are referring to themselves and their experiences through their message of following dreams and getting to fame. Therefore I feel a further connection with the song because It feels although the artists themselves are talking directly to you and transmitting their message to you personally. There are many shots used throughout this music video, of which I feel the close up shots are particularly meaningful and effective, for example the close up shot of the Mothers cigarette buts, contrasts dramatically with the medium close up shot of the 'Fathers' healthy orange juice and fruit bowl. This therefore highlights the differences between the two individuals, but therefore highlights the message of the song, that anyone can achieve their dreams despite their different lifestyles.

Friday 3 July 2015

It is important for me to understand the developments that have occurred in the music industry directly relating to music videos, this is so I can fit my music video in with the time period of which I want it to reflect and further I have now a greater understanding of the current conventions of music videos and how these conventions came about. I now have a progressive view of music videos.

Thursday 2 July 2015

Here I have researched into music video theories, of which can ultimately guide me in my research and planning for my final product. It is crucial that I understand these theories as therefore I can apply them to my music video, ensuring that mine is at the standard of those currently present on today's market!
My Name is Naomi Palfreman and I am currently studying A2 media studies, of which I aim to produce a high standard music video, album cover and website for my artist. It is very important that my products reflect my chosen target market, and genre, as well as submitting to music video theories such as that of Andrew Goodwin. Therefore I will have a period of research and planning to ensure that all my products appeal to my target audience and are of a standard of which is reflective of other successful music videos and album covers on the market today. Enjoy Reading!
