For my research it is important that I explore music videos that are successful in society today. While searching through music videos on YouTube, I came across this video 'Hall of Fame'- the script ft.Will.i.am. This song came out on the 19th August 2012,and since then has reached 195,578,748 views on YouTube. The track was given its first radio play on Capital Fm on 23 July 2012. The song stood at number one in Ireland for four weeks, while occupying number two in the UK's charts, narrowly missing out on first position of which was granted to 'Let me love you'- Ne-Yo. I really like this 'illustrative' (Andrew Goodwin's theory) music video, of which combines both Narrative and performance elements, following Simon Firths music video typologies and classification. The narrative elements are interspersed, following the life's of two individuals who are both learning to follow their differing dreams, one a keen ballerina and the other an avid boxer. This therefore attracts me to the song because I feel that it has a deep meaning to it, which can also inspire many young people maybe interested in pursuing their future in the performance industry and so this songs target audience could arguably be young people. The performance elements of the song, show the 'Script' of whom are the Irish pop band who wrote this song and Black eyed peas 'Will.I.am' performing this song in a warehouse space. This gives me the indication that they are referring to themselves and their experiences through their message of following dreams and getting to fame. Therefore I feel a further connection with the song because It feels although the artists themselves are talking directly to you and transmitting their message to you personally. There are many shots used throughout this music video, of which I feel the close up shots are particularly meaningful and effective, for example the close up shot of the Mothers cigarette buts, contrasts dramatically with the medium close up shot of the 'Fathers' healthy orange juice and fruit bowl. This therefore highlights the differences between the two individuals, but therefore highlights the message of the song, that anyone can achieve their dreams despite their different lifestyles.
